Butler Gallery ...

Housed in Kilkenny Castle, the internationally renowned Butler Gallery has a central role to play in the cultural life of the city and county of Kilkenny boasting a collection that traces the development of Irish art from the 1800s to date. The gallery established in 1943 has developed a reputation for its cutting edge contemporary exhibitions and the continued development of its collection. Visitors to the gallery can engage with works of leading artists of international repute through the annual exhibitions programme. Another role is to continue to act as a resource, and a meeting point, for the visual arts community and the general public.

Through our diverse exhibition programming, our important collection, and our far-reaching education initiatives, we actively promote a value of arts to society. It runs a rich and varied education programme linked to exhibitions at the Gallery and the Butler Gallery Collection, aimed at a variety of audiences of diverse age groups, backgrounds and abilities. These include school children and students, families, adults and community groups with activity taking the form of talks, discussions, workshops, residencies, one-off events and special projects devised in collaboration with artists, audience groups and external partners.
