Callan is one of the largest towns in County Kilkenny and was founded over 800 years ago. It is situated just 16km south of Kilkenny City on the N76 Kilkenny to Clonmel road and has a very long history of being a market town. There is a weekly farmers market where you can expect to find local produce ranging from tasty breads to freshly laid eggs, home baked products, a range of vegetables; plants and shrubs. Callan's history is still to be seen in the fine churches and medieval monuments and the important field monuments located in the area these include The Motte which is the best persevered Motte-and-Bailey in Ireland, The Famine Workhouse, Callan Augustinian Friary and St. Mary?s Church. Callan is the birthplace of Edmund Ignatius Rice founder of the Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers. You can walk around the 300 year old thatched house in which he was born and raised; also on this site are the Edmund Rice Memorial Chapel and a large visitor centre.Other famous people born in Callan include John Locke composer of many poems including his best known poem ?Dawn on the Irish Coast? commonly known as the ?Emigrants Anthem?. Painter Tony O?Malley and Play write and Novelist Thomas Kilroy and James Hoban the designer of The White House was born just outside Callan and moved to America where he remained until his death and was involved in many other projects there including the Charleston County Courthouse in South Carolina. Bed and Breakfasts are widely available in Callan. There are also a number of nice pubs and restaurants to be found there.

For those of you looking to take a break from all that sightseeing, why not take a couple of hours away to enjoy a round of golf, Callan Golf Club is the perfect location. Situated just 1 mile outside the town of Callan, this 18 hole parkland course features well placed bunkers and hazards, with water featuring on 8 of the holes. The course has a justifiable and well earned reputation for the high standard of presentation and upkeep of both fairways and greens.
