Castlecomer New Years Day Wellie Race ...

Crowds at the wellie race
Originally started in the Powley (an area in the hills surrounding Castlecomer) men decided, while playing cards, on St Stephen's day (Boxing Day) to run off the Christmas excess by having a race over a cross country circuit. Not being the type of men that would be caught dead in a pair of runners, let alone actually owning a pair, the most obvious foot wear for this type of event was yes you guessed it wellingtons. The history books will record that Paddy Phelan became the first winner of the first ever Wellington race. The Castlecomer Wellie Race has been running on New Year's Day since 1980. It is a fun day out for all the family. The day starts with entertainment on the square in Castlecomer from midday, followed by the best fancy dress parade you are ever likely to see, New York eat your heart out.

Off we go at the Wellie race
Then the world famous Wellie Race takes place. A 5km fun (not) run, over the Kiltown circuit. Walkers are welcome and there are prizes for the first ten men, ten women, three veteran men, three senior ladies and the best dressed walker. There are refreshments in the community hall for all participants after the race and each participant receives a commemorative rosette of the day. The event raises significant monies for local, national and international charities and is without doubt one of the best ways to start any New Year. If you would like addition information log on to
